Sylvia Schroer PhD MSc BSc BCST Lic Ac ATCM member - Biographical information

I am a qualified acupuncturist and craniosacral therapist and I have four years experience working as a research scientist in the University of York's Health Sciences Department.

My interest in Chinese medicine began more than 20 years ago. After completing a training in Five Element acupuncture in 1992 at the College of Traditional Acupuncture I continued to study in the UK (with John and Angie Hicks), China, Vietnam, Europe and Japan. I qualified in Chinese herbal medicine (Kanpo) in 1996 and was one of the first UK practitioners to train in Toyohari acupuncture with Stephen Birch and Junko Ida, qualifying in 2001.

I moved to York in 2003, following an MSc in Complementary Therapy Studies from the University of Westminster, having received funding from the National Institute of Health Research to undertake a PhD researching acupuncture for depression. My research was used to develop a major clinical trial comparing acupuncture with counselling. I have published a number of articles in academic journals.

Prior to working with Chinese medicine I studied psychology at University College London and subsequently co-facilitated an NHS psychotherapy group for 3 years. I have also trained as a samaritan, so have good listening skills.

As an acupuncture practitioner I worked in various complementary therapy clinics (Clapham Common Clinic, The Natural Health Service); for the NHS (The Belgravia Surgery); in community projects such as The Stress Project in Holloway and The Hoxton Health Group (for the over 60's); with drug and alcohol users (The Core Trust, The Angel Drug Project); at The Traditional Acupuncture Centre in Waterloo, and in the corporate sector at the BBC world service.

My training has encompassed specialised acupuncture protocols and herbal medicine formula for many health conditions including treatment of different types of pain, digestive problems, sleep problems, skin conditions, mental and emotional issues, fertility issues, auto-immune disorders, women’s health problems and working with illnesses where stress or trauma are contributory factors.

I offer:
-Traditional whole-person diagnosis
-Treatment finely tuned to each individual.
-Specialised pain free acupuncture techniques.
-Children’s acupuncture.
-Kanpo herbal medicine.
- 10 years experience working with the Over 60's

In 2013 I completed a training in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy at the Craniosacral Therapy Educational Trust.
