Acupuncture for Back pain or Neck Pain

There is some evidence to suggest acupuncture can help sufferer's of back pain, which is why this therapy is now recommended in the NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines.

Whether acupuncture can help your back or neck pain depends on what is causing the problem - and we recommend you seek the advice of a GP or specialist to identify the source of the condition. Provided there are no serious underlying issues then it is safe to proceed with acupuncture care. Other therapies may also be beneficial - particularly osteopathy - and we will collaborate with our York Natural Health colleagues, and other practitioners, to identify the best treatment options for you - which may involve a combined approach.

If you have a chronic or recurring back or neck problem life can be very difficult - any constant pain is simply exhausting and debilitating. It is very likely that you will have been given pain relief medications, and if there is nerve pain these drugs might include tricyclic antidepressants such as amitryptaline or anti-epileptics like gabapentin. Some individuals can tolerate these medications easily but others find them unpleasant and would prefer not to have to take them. If this is the case then why not try a course of acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment alongside medication - to see if it can help. If it does you may be able to reduce the amount of medication you need - although this is best done after your condition has improved and stabilised, and under the advice of a doctor or medical specialist.

From a Chinese medical perspective there are many different treatment options with some forms of acupuncture, such as Toyohari, offering specific treatments for the neck and lower back that are very gentle and soothing.
